One highlight of HUC-JIR’s Gendler Grapevine Project is the Everett Gendler Environmental Lecture Series at the New York campus of HUC-JIR.
In mid-October, the HUC-JIR community welcomed Rabbi Fred Dobb, Chair of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life and rabbi at Adat Shalom Congregation in Bethesda, MD. In his talk, “An Earthy Sukkot: A Shiur on Eco-Judaism for Jewish Professionals,” he shared text study, explored Sukkot and shmita (the sabbatical year in the seven-year agricultural cycle), discussed best practices in synagogue and Jewish communal environmental efforts, and provided a history of the Jewish environmental movement.
